Turtle Farm in the Caymans

On our last day at Grand Cayman, we decided to visit the Boatswain's Turtle Farm before heading out. It is on the tip of Grand Cayman about 8 miles from Georgetown. You pretty much can't miss it if you're driving there, which we were, we rented a car for our trip to the Cayman Islands and I would highly recommend it. Having our own car allowed us to tour the entire island extensively on our own time. anyhow, back to our Green Sea Turtle visit, once we got there, we decided to just do the Turtle Farm tour rather then the entire park. There seems to be a lot to do, but it is setup for cruise ship mass tourism and that's not really my thing. However, I did want to get to enjoy the turtles so we went ahead and just did the Turtle Farm exhibit. It was about $30 to go to the Turtle farm. I thought this was expensive, but everything in the Cayman's is very expensive so you just get used to it. Once we got our wristbands we headed in, only to find out we were the only people there. This got us a very customized tour of the Turtle farm, but I thought I would've seen more people. We did go in May and towards the end of the day so the tourist's on the island during that time is very low. We found a great guide who worked there and he walked us around and showed us the turtles and let us explore on our own as well. All restaurants that serve turtle on around here use this turtle farm to get them. That way they are locally raised on the farm and not harvested out of the ocean, kinda good I guess, but still makes you feel for these turtles weighing up to 700 pounds in these tanks. Nonetheless, the turtles are incredible, these are some of the most elegant and beautiful turtles I've seen and I can't wait to go diving and see one in the wild. Since they raise them here, sell some to the Cayman restaurants and also release some back into the wild, they have all different stages of turtle growth available to see. It's truly amazing to get to see and hold these guys. We were able to hold the small ones, the big ones, we just admired, for one I don't think I could pick them up and two they know how to bite! We spent about an hour or so walking around and looking at all the varieties and headed out. Overall it was a fun experience and worth doing while visiting the Cayman Islands. That night I went to a local restaurant on the east end of Grand Cayman, which is where our resort was and had turtle for dinner. It's the only place in the world you can eat Green Sea Turtle so I thought I would give it a try. Of course, as I suspected it tasted like chicken!
